Inmate Identified in South Bay Correctional Facility Death; Investigations Underway

Boston, Mass. — Authorities have identified 32-year-old Shacoby Kenny of Boston as the inmate who died Sunday night at the Suffolk County House of Correction, commonly referred to as South Bay. The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office and Boston Police Department have launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death.

According to an official statement, custody staff reported that Kenny began displaying erratic behavior inside his housing unit on March 4 and allegedly physically attacked several officers. Officials say Kenny continued to behave unpredictably, running inside the unit and attempting to avoid officers before being detained.

Once in custody, Kenny became unresponsive, the Sheriff’s Office said. On-site medical personnel immediately began emergency care, and Boston EMS transported him to a local hospital, where he later died.

While the Sheriff’s Office described the incident as the result of Kenny’s behavior and a struggle with officers, other inmates have claimed that Kenny was repeatedly struck by correctional officer before becoming unresponsive. These accounts have not yet been confirmed and are part of the ongoing investigation.

Kenny had been held at the Suffolk County Jail and House of Correction since February 2025. His pending charges included assault and battery on a police officer, assault and battery on a person over 65, and assault with a dangerous weapon. Records also show he had previously spent time at Bridgewater State Hospital in July.

The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office said it is aware of the incident, and both internal and external investigations are in progress to determine what occurred inside the facility.

Officials have not released additional details, and no staff members have been publicly named in connection with the case. The Sheriff’s Office stated that more information will be shared when the review is complete.
